Captains Centenary Drive In 2024

Captains Centenary Drive In 2024

2024 will be a year of celebration. We have a fantastic course in an amazing location, and a membership with a shared passion for the success of our club.

So much has changed since Dr. Alister MacKenzie opened our course in 1924. The world was recovering from the First World War, no-one had yet heard of Hitler, women under 30 were yet to be allowed to vote, and the thought of non-white men being allowed to play MacKenzie’s more famous course in Georgia would have caused the members to choke on their cigars. It’s not so long ago that jacket and tie was obligatory (for men!) in the Clubhouse. No doubt the grumblings from the traditionalists were loud when this rule was relaxed, but the majority now enjoy being able to enjoy their post-round drink in shorts and flip-flops.

We cannot imagine what membership of Teignmouth Golf Club in 2124 will look like, but our Centenary year is an opportunity to reflect on how the club has evolved, and how we can help to shape its future.

The ceremony on the 6 January, which saw our youngest member and longest standing member come together to raise the Centenary Flag, demonstrates the way TGC provides a place for the junior stars of the future as well as for the men and women who have already devoted many years to make the Club the place it is today. It is one of our ambitions to use our Centenary year to encourage the wider community to experience what golf and TGC in particular have to offer.

We hope that you will join the Captains in celebrating this milestone in the history of Teignmouth Golf Club and supporting the events that the Centenary Committee have worked so hard to arrange. We also hope that you will reflect on how you can help the club to be the best it can be, both now and for the next 100 years.
